Hans Carlson
Vice President National Security Space
Hans Carlson has extensive experience in National Security Space Strategy, Intelligence Community and Department of Defense Space Programs, Spacecraft Systems Engineering, and Spacecraft Program Management. He completed his undergraduate education at Utah State University, earning a B.S. in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering in 1999. Post graduate work was completed at Arizona State University with an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, awarded in 2000. Upon graduation from USU, he commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force, eventually serving seven years on active duty in a variety of assignments in the space technology, satellite operations, and national security space arenas. During his seven year of service, he earned the Joint Service Commendation Medal, AF Commendation Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and completed Squadron Officer School & Officer Field Training as a Distinguished Graduate.
Mr. Carlson’s career in the aerospace industry began at the Space Dynamics Laboratory where he worked as a spacecraft systems engineer developing and managing a number of small satellite and inter-planetary exploration missions. He then worked at Orbital Sciences Corporation as a design engineer on the $500M NASA X-34 program, design, integrating, and testing flight hardware. During graduate school, Mr. Carlson led an AFRL University Nanosatellite team that culminated with the launch of the Three Corner Sat satellite constellation on the inaugural flight of the Delta IV Heavy launch vehicle in 2004. Following his entry into the Air Force, Mr. Carlson gained extensive engineering and program management experience on a number of Department of Defense and Intelligence Community satellite and spacecraft programs over the course of his career. An initial assignment at the Space Test Program at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM provided experience as a test engineer on the $200M Coriolis satellite, program manager on the $25M STPSat-1 spacecraft, and Program Manager and Integration Lead for the STP-1 launch utilizing the ESPA secondary payload adapter and five small satellites. He also served as the Mission Director at the RSC satellite operations center, leading the satellite operations team through early on-orbit checkout, mission planning, and anomaly resolution activities.
Mr. Carlson next assignment as a Program Manager at the National Reconnaissance Office Advanced Science and Technology Directorate Special Technology Group provided the opportunity to develop and lead a number of classified spacecraft and technology programs. He developed new spacecraft and payload concepts, generated mission requirements, created acquisition plans, and managed significant budget for classified NRO flight efforts. While serving as Program Manager, he coordinated technical requirements with multiple user and operational organizations, conducted classified program briefings to Congressional members and their staff, and gained programmatic and funding support for several critical national security space efforts with Intelligence Community Directors and other senior decision makers at the Pentagon and within the NRO.
Mr. Carlson’s current position is Vice President of National Security Programs at Strategic Space Development, a small strategic planning and business development consulting firm. He provides a deep knowledge base in strategic planning, business development, technology investments, mission concept development, competitive intelligence, proposal management and program execution. In addition, his extensive knowledge and working experience with the Intelligence Community, Department of Defense, and Congress provide the foundation for a whole range of successful space industry advocacy and mission development efforts. As a senior consultant and company partner, he serves on the Board of Directors, manages services and financials for over 12 company clients, and directs activities for 20+ associate consultants.
